WSJ: ‘Joshua Redman, where are we’ Review: Jazz Juxtapositions on PBS

The saxophonist is the center of this ‘Next at the Kennedy Center’ presentation, which combines first-rate performances by his band with thoughtful interviews.

The tenor saxophonist proves himself both a repository off jazz past and a navigator of the new.

Joshua Redman featured in KQED's "Best Bets for the 2024 Healdsburg Jazz Festival"

“As a Sonoma County resident and jazz fan, I’ve gone to the Healdsburg Jazz Festival nearly every year for the past 20 years. When the lineup drops, like it recently did for the 2024 festival running June 15–23, I make notated lists of what to see. What follows are my picks for the best shows to see among the formidable lineup."

“Also at Bacchus Landing is the remarkable Chief Chief Adjuah (née Christian Scott) in a double bill with The Cookers (Cecil McBee, George Cables, Billy Hart, Craig Handy, Eddie Henderson, Donald Harrison Jr. and David Weiss) on June 21; the Joshua Redman Quartet featuring Gabrielle Cavassa on June 23; and Ambrose Akinmusire, Bill Frisell and Herlin Riley with opener the Brandee Younger Trio on June 22. Redman tends to shine in Healdsburg, and Younger blew my mind last month in San Francisco.”

DETROIT JAZZ FESTIVAL ANNOUNCES 2024 LINEUP

DETROIT – The Detroit Jazz Festival, the world’s largest (and best) free jazz festival, tonight announced this year’s lineup during a free livestream preview event that included live performances from the 2024 Artist-In-Residence Brian Blade & The Fellowship Band, and the One-World Jazz Orchestra, a collaboration between the Berklee Global Jazz Institute and Wayne State University’s Jazz Program.

The preview event also served as a sneak peek for the new Gretchen C. Valade Jazz Center (GCVJC) on the campus of Wayne State University. The GCVJC is scheduled to open to the public later in the Fall.

“This year’s lineup reflects a very dynamic and eclectic combination of next generation and legacy jazz musicians who reflect the diverse tapestry of jazz and its evolutions,” said Chris Collins, president and artistic director, Detroit Jazz Festival Foundation. “We look forward to their energy and craftsmanship on our stages and seeing our faithful jazz fans in downtown Detroit on Labor Day weekend”

"where are we" selected as Boston Globe's 50 favorite albums of 2023

“Joshua Redman’s first album with a vocalist may also be his most emotional, from his first dissonant tenor sax cry (quoting Woody Guthrie’s “This Land Is Your Land”) to singer Gabrielle Cavassa’s hushed take on the Jimmy McHugh-Harold Adamson standard “Where Are You?,” from Redman’s “After Minneapolis (face toward mo(u)rning)” to John Coltrane’s “Alabama.” Supporting players include pianist Aaron Parks, bassist Joe Sanders, and drummer Brian Blade.” (Jon Garelick)
